Why SAT Changed from 2400 to 1600?

From 2005 to 2016, SAT had 3 sections: Critical Reading 800 + Math 800 + Writing 800 = 2400 total.

Students found Writing essay confusing and mandatory essay was criticized. So from March 2016, College Board removed Writing from total and made Essay optional. New SAT became 800 Evidence-Based Reading & Writing + 800 Math = 1600 total.

So perfect score changed from 2400 to 1600. Both are same difficulty, just different scale.

2400 to 1600 Conversion – How It Really Works?

Many sites use wrong formula divide by 1.5. That is inaccurate.

Real conversion is based on College Board’s official concordance study. They tested students who took both old and new SAT and compared performance.

Example:

  • Old 2200 ≠ New 1466 (by 1.5 math)
  • Old 2200 = New 1480 (official concordance)

Difference is because Writing section was weighted differently. Our calculator uses official table + interpolation for 99% accuracy.
